Sheikh Ja'afar Mahmud Adam was born in Daura around 1962 (or possibly 1964).

He started his studies at home under the guidance of his father's friend, Malam Haruna, who was also his maternal uncle.

Afterwards, he was transferred to Malam Umaru in Koza, about 9km north of Daura. He had digestion problems which were cured through their meeting. He then moved to Kano based on that teacher's recommendation in 1971 (or 1972) and began studying at Malam Abdullahi's school, a public servant from Niger, who lived in Fagge neighborhood in Kano.
